Taking on your competition

Flo State exists to explore the balance of beauty, psych + performance in online stores.

I see you, rubbernecking every move they make.

Their latest product launch.

Every story they post.

You've even lined their pockets by ordering directly from their site under a not-so secret name

All to check it isn't as good as yours (it wasn't!)

So why are they scooping up YOUR customers?

Here’s how can you nab back some market share

Let's Steal Their Customers

No. 1: Put yourself in your ideal buyers booties

Open Google, TikTok, Instagram and search for your category of product

What do you see?

Write down all the brand solutions that come up.

Write down the hooks, painpoints, benefits and angles that are used

I do a version of this exercise before working with my clients. So their website can address each and every one of them. Cha ching

More interestingly, pay attention to unusual alternatives:

The DIY solution that they're trying like baking their own protein bars, instead of buying them.

No. 2: What are their Customers Loving and Hating?

Let's play detective.

If you're fortunate enough to be time-rich, manually run through your competitor’s reviews. The highs, the lows, the wishlist of features.

Or use an AI tool like Octoparse to scrape the reviews and stick it in ChatGPT to look for themes and do the work for you.

No. 3: What makes you stand out?

So now you have a list of why your competitors products are gelling.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not where you copy them.

Instead, lean in to what makes you different!

What do you do better, faster, differently, sustainably?

You MUST have an angle or you wouldn’t have sweated over your products for fun.

You need to show that how you're the superior choice in every way, by filling those gaps.

This is where you'll get the edge and where I see so many clients missing out.

No.4: Test these hooks everywhere

Create social posts around them.

Build listicles and landing pages to test theme (or get me to do that)

Target keywords on Google (and socials) about these unique points.

Put benefits badges on your product page imagery.

Shoot lifestyle images around the top themes.

Align your messaging to these themes

No.5: Kick back with a low-alc or canned wine

Watch as your biggest competitor’s customers flock to you and start watching and copying your every move.

OVER TO YOU

Let’s take a leaf out of a classic

“Are you gonna bark all day, little doggie, or are you gonna bite?”

Tarantino was talking to you.

Watch and wince or take solid action

Book a call, I’d love to help

ON MY RADAR

Storytelling at its finest

2 facts of life. We all love a good story + coffee.

This is what happens when you bring the 2 together: Tita’s Coffee

Thousands of followers and queue round the block for your opening weekend.

Where are the Insta is dead now?

I’m a LinkedIn convert, especially when this happens. Eeek.

Plus I got a shoutout from an incredible Marketer, Louis Grenier

I’ll be uber British and sign off about the sun, because the weather really is everything here…and it might be why your sales are down.
